International Human Rights month finds its home in December, due to the fact that the Declaration of Human Rights was adopted on December 10th, 1948.

The Declaration serves as an agreement among nations. It lays out those values that the human family holds dearest. Rights like free speech, liberty, privacy, social security, health, education, and more are all expressed in the document.

The document isn't a formal treaty, so it doesn't legally bind countries in any way. That being said, it is frequently invoked in court and has heavily influenced the development of Human Rights Law. There are also a number of legally binding agreements that were created in the wake of the adoption of The Declaration of Human Rights.

Conventions on the elimination of torture, racial discrimination, and discrimination against women, as well as the illumination of rights for children and people with disabilities have all come as a result of the declaration.

The value of such a document is hard to imagine. At the same time, there's still a lot to be done. Pledgeling has the honor of working with a number of organizations that are working towards Human Rights causes, and we want to take this opportunity to mention a few of them.

Human Rights First

Human Rights First is an organization that seeks to "ensure the dignity to which everyone is entitled and stem intolerance, tyranny, and violence."

They work primarily within the United States, and recently started the Freedom for Detained Refugees Project. Their project will partner with law firms across the country to provide quality legal representation, action, and advocacy.

Physicians for Human Rights

Physicians for Human Rights works to use the sciences to document and fight human rights violations.

Using forensic medicine and scientific documentation, the group takes a fact-based approach to documenting human rights abuses. They also use their influence to empower and advocate for the individuals affected, as well as those who are working to further human rights causes.

Human Rights Watch

Human Rights Watch is an international organization that investigates and exposes those who aren't upholding human dignity. Their ultimate goal is to "bring perpetrators to justice."

They pair with similar organizations to make steady, gradual progress toward a better world. You can contribute directly to their cause here.
